Why This Matters

For too long, society has drawn an artificial boundary around who deserves moral consideration, legal protection, and societal value. While scientific research confirms the rich inner lives of animals and their capacity for suffering, our laws, economies, and cultures often fail to reflect this understanding. The consequences are immense—billions of animals suffer in factory farms, wild habitats are destroyed without regard for the beings who call them home, and advancements in technology continue to widen the ethical gap between human and non-human life.

Expanding the moral circle is not just a philosophical exercise; it is a necessary step toward justice, sustainability, and a more compassionate world. Recognizing the intrinsic worth of non-human life challenges outdated systems and creates new possibilities for how we coexist with animals and the natural world. By reshaping legal frameworks, influencing cultural narratives, and advocating for policies that respect non-human sentience, we can move toward a future where dignity is not limited by species.

Our Mission

The More Than Human Project (MTHP) is dedicated to expanding the moral circle to ensure dignity, recognition, and rights for non-human beings. We work at the intersection of policy, ethics, and science to drive systemic change in how societies perceive and treat non-human life.

Through advocacy, research, and collaboration, we aim to:

  • Elevate the legal and societal recognition of animal sentience and moral worth.

  • Influence policies that secure dignity and protection for non-human beings.

  • Challenge anthropocentric biases in law, technology, and culture.

Our Focus Areas

  • Establish legal and institutional frameworks that recognize animal sentience and moral worth, ensuring their rights and protections are reflected in policy.

    • Advocate for legal personhood or stronger protections for non-human beings.

    • Influence national and international policies related to animal welfare, conservation, and ethical technology.

    • Work with lawmakers, legal scholars, and policymakers to reshape governance structures around non-human recognition.

  • Shift societal narratives to recognize non-human beings as valuable members of our shared world.

    • Challenge anthropocentric worldviews through storytelling, media, and education.

    • Support research on animal sentience, cognition, and rights, making scientific insights more accessible.

    • Elevate Indigenous, philosophical, and ethical perspectives that emphasize interconnectedness and respect for non-human life.

  • Harness scientific advancements and build AI governance frameworks that protect and uplift non-human beings, ensuring technology serves their interests rather than exacerbating harm.

    • Develop AI governance models that integrate non-human interests into ethical AI frameworks, preventing the further marginalization of animals and ecosystems.

    • Use AI and data-driven tools to monitor and improve animal welfare, conservation efforts, and environmental protections.

    • Advocate for regulatory oversight to prevent AI-driven harms to non-human life, such as ecosystem destruction, exploitative factory farming, or the commodification of sentient beings.

    • Promote technological solutions that replace exploitative industries—including alternative proteins, habitat protection tech, and AI-assisted conservation.
